Social Media Marketing: Classic vs Social

I had a conversation with my boss about the direction I saw my career going. I told him that as much as I love photojournalism, I see myself doing more. I shared with him that I hoped to get into online marketing. He seemed a bit surprised as asked me if I wanted to calculate ROIs.

That's when I realized that what I really wanted to do was social media marketing and not classic marketing.

Marketing in my office consists of large to small campaigns that include commercials, brochures, and events. It is a big component of UFHealth, in fact it is the heart of it. Without these marketing efforts business would be lost.

However, I want to do the cool "new" thing, social marketing. I want to be the person who communicates with the world in real-time. I want to react to customers and create great content to engage them.

I am not saying that social is better than classic, in fact I think they can both work together. Classic marketing looks at the bigger picture and sets rules for a brand to abide by to send a massive message to an audience. Social marketing can help connect these audience even quicker with the information that is given out. Social marketing can spread the word even farther than classic marketing can because social media is available for everybody and everywhere.

I recently liked the Dark is Beautiful campaign on Facebook.  This is an Indian campaign that seeks to change attitudes and the unjust effects of skin color bias. I would have never heard of this campaign, I don't live in India to see the commercials or billboards but I ran into this on the internet, many miles away. Classic marketing is perfect for a targeted audience while social marketing can reach world wide.
